Bedtime reading

Hiya, WEJies!!!

Do you have a bedtime story-time? It's one of my favourite times of day.

We don't manage it every night, mind you - now my children are 12 & 10 there are nights when they don't get in till it's just too late to squeeze a story in - but we do it as often as we can.

It's not always easy finding a story they both want to hear - my son prefers action adventures, my daughter likes gentler stories - but we manage. Books we've enjoyed together recently include Watership Down by Richard Adams, and Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian - both brilliant books - and we've just finished Philip Ardagh's The Grunts In Trouble.

We're currently on Gene Kemp's The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler, and we're loving it. The only problem is that sometimes, while they're waiting for me, they do a bit of reading of their own - and then, when I'm ready, I have to wait for them to get to the end of a chapter! Here's a picture I took last night, before I got started on the next chapter of Tyke Tiler:

My son's reading Double or Die by Charlie Higson (part of the Young Bond series), and my daughter's reading Vern and Lettuce by Sarah McIntyre.

What's your favourite bedtime reading? Any recommendations, bearing in mind my children's differing tastes?

John

  3. Hi John I love reading but not so much before bed. I've read Goodnight Mister Tom and I think it is a very good book!! I think your daughter might enjoy Jacqueline Wilson, probably Lily Alone is a good one to start with. Your son might enjoy Bridge To Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.

  4. Hi John
I like reading but not at night time, I most like reading in the morning. The book I am now reading is called Diary of a Wimpy Werewolf it is so good, it is like Diary of a Wimpy Kid but a about a werewolf. I've also enjoyed reading The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas by David Almond. I think your children would enjoy reading that.

  5. Hello John I enjoy bedtime reading but by myself. I just finished Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. It is exciting but I would recommend for your son the Alex Rider Series and for your daughter the Girls FC books if she likes football. They are written by Helena Pielichaty.

  6. Hello John I do read a story before bed because on my window there are lots of long books so I never get bored. Also for your son
I would recommend Darren Shan becouse there are lots of books in the series and becuase they are very interesting and when you stop you want to read more. For your daughter, I'm not relly sure but I think she would enjoy Born to Run by Michael Morpurgo. I still enjoy your books, they are still awesome to read.

  7. Hi, all

Gosh, I've been busy lately! I'll try to put up a post this morning letting you know what I've been doing. I do read your comments, even though I don't always have time to reply immediately.

Thanks for your bedtime reading suggestions.

Alexander, I'm a bit of a comics fan, too - there's no 'even though' about it! My son hasn't really got into them, though my daughter loves The Beano - and, of course, Vern & Lettuce. She went through a Rainbow Magic phase a few years ago, but it was very short - there's only so often you can read about goblins stealing things and tripping over!

Ben, we've already read One Dog And His Boy - we loved it. It was my book of the year last year, I think (or was it the year before?). Reading before bed is an especially good idea if you've been watching TV, which can sometimes get your brain buzzing in an unhelpful-for-bedtime kind of way - good idea!

Alisha, my daughter is so into jacqueline Wilson! She's currently reading The Illustrated Mum. We watched the film of Bridge to Terabithia recently, and loved it; I think getting a copy of the book would be a great idea - thank you!

Caylan, I was really cross with myself last year, because I was at a literature festival with David Almond, and decided to get a copy of The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas - but by the time I got round to it, they'd sold out! Now that you've recommended it, I really must get a copy.

Ben, my son does like Alex Rider - I think he prefers Young Bond, though. You're absolutely right about Girls FC - it's a brilliant series, and my daughter's read them all, many of them several times. If you've read the last book in the series, you may remember a girl who's mentioned called Cara Stroud? My daughter's name is Cara, and we live in Stroud; when Helena - who's a friend of mine - heard how much Cara likes the books, she named the character after her. Cara was very proud about that!

Alec, I think you've recommended Darren Shan to me before? I really must get hold of some of his books. I think my daughter was given Born To Run for her last birthday - certainly, she was given a Michael Morpurgo book and I think it was that one. Whichever one it was, I know she enjoyed it!
